Two of the three people who died in Monday’s Amtrak derailment in Washington state were train enthusiasts who were members of an organization that pushed for the new rail route.

The derailment happened Monday morning as Train 501 hit a tight curve along the Point Defiance Bypass, a newly completed route that was meant to enable Amtrak trains to avoid a winding rail it shared with freight trains.
